Tongue Theory (well, proposition): When waking to the experience of a tongue on and in one's mouth, it is better that the tongue belongs to one's partner than one's dog.
Tongue Law: it usually belongs to the dog.

Paw Theory: the soft caressing touch against your cheek comes from your hungry cat, not your hungry partner! ;-) If the cat's not declawed, well that's another story...
LOL. This made think of the old Peanuts' episodes with Lucy running around screaming, "Dog germs!!!" But dog's mouths are actually quite clean, so they say.
I have cats instead of dogs. Seven cats and none of them declawed, so I do get scratched now and then.
I don't mind dog saliva so long as I like the particular dog.
